HOW IT WORKS:
Welcome to SOCES Drama. Each year, we put on a Middle School Musical and a High School Musical. In addition we always have a High School performance of a Shakespeare play. This year, we have added a dramatic play, which will be performed by the Thespians.

THESPIAN SOCIETY:
The International Thespian Troupe #7109 is a group of dedicated drama students in grades 9 - 12, by invitation only. These students organize fundraising for the drama department and are responsible for multiple elements behind the scenes for the middle school performance. It is during the middle school’s performance that these student’s leadership responsibilities shine - they work with the Director to coordinate costuming, props, sound, lighting and coordinate with the “house” through tickets, publicity and concessions.

DRAMA CLUB:
The Drama Club is open to any student of SOCES grades 7 -12 regardless of their enrollment in a drama class. This club meets monthly with Mr. Beckman. This club is involved in fundraising for the drama program and publicity for shows. Elections take place in late Spring for the following school year however new students may join during “Club Days” in October.

What Is DTASC?
In 1920, a small group of teachers from area high schools and colleges in Southern California decided to present a Shakespeare Festival.  In the years that followed, that small but determined group of educators became a larger and even more determined group.  This was the humble beginnings of what is now known as the Drama Teachers Association of Southern California (DTASC); an organization of over one hundred middle school and high school theatre teachers from as far south as San Diego to as far north as San Luis Obispo. If you’re unfamiliar with DTASC, then you’re unfamiliar with one of the most prestigious educational theatre organizations in the country. Their mission statement says it best: “It is our mission to create a network where theatre educators and students can effectively communicate ideas, share resources, workshop, and showcase their skills. We believe in creating an environment that fosters the best in educational theatre. Through performance opportunities, diversity and professional adjudication, we support and reward hard work and commitment to the discipline of theatre and education.”  The organization, run solely by volunteers, seems to be holding true to that lofty ideal. You be the judge, here is a brief glimpse at some of DTASC’s annual endeavors: The organization hosts 4 festivals a year, giving some two thousand students from grades 6 through 12 the opportunity to perform before judges hailing from top universities to the professional theatre. Hosts workshops for both students and teachers. Makes available profit and non-profit opportunities for both students and teachers. Delivers to its members Arts in Education Updates. Frequently and exuberantly recognizes years of service from dedicated educators as well as dedicated community supporters. And finally, offers scholarships to worthy students from within the organization as well as scholarships and grants from outside supporters. The organization also boasts an impressive list of alumni including Nicholas Cage, Sally Field, Mare Winningham, Kevin Spacey, Val Kilmer, Richard Dreyfuss, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Jason Bateman and America Ferrera.

COSTUMES:
Every show the student is asked to donate a $10 wardrobe fee. This helps with rental fees and cleaning of costumes. It also helps with the cost of hair and makeup necessities. Please download the costume fee form if your child did not bring one home. This is to be handed back in on the Mandatory Costume Day for each show.

VOLUNTEER INFORMATION:
Our drama performances would not be possible without parent volunteers. Our parents help in all departments in the preparation of these shows. During every performance, we ask parents to help in concession (which includes food, telegrams and opportunity baskets), ticket sales and behind stage working with the students to make their stage cues. It is the money that we raise that helps fund each production.
If you have not filled out a volunteer form, please download and hand in to the teacher, or email us with your contact info.We thank you in advance for your volunteer hours.

PATRON OF THE ARTS:
As we all know, Public School budgets do not support the Arts. Our production budgets have been cut severely, making it very difficult to put on a show, complete with props, costumes, lighting and sound. It is through the help of those who financially support our program, that we are able to continue with our the quality productions. Please give what you can. All support is appreciated. Thank you in advance.
